Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Fourth Sunday of Lent
March 22nd, 2009 - Bulletin

God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

— John 3:17

The Constitution on the Liturgy states: “The Lenten season….recalls baptism or prepares for it.” With this in mind I’d like to reflect of the Gospel of Year A (page 86 in the missal). Last Sunday’s Gospel (Year A) focused on the symbolism of water, this weekend the focus is on light. I do this because we have one person who will receive the Sacraments of Initiation this Easter.

The light that emanates from the sun or that is produced by electricity puts nothing new into our lives. Light makes it possible to see what is there. If we walk into a room without light we are liable to crash into the furniture. When we turn on the light switch the room is flooded with light and we can see where we are going; we see the chairs, table and so on. The light does not produce the furnishings in the room but allows us to see them.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” He did not claim to create or change the reality of what exists. He makes possible for eyes that are blind to see what is already in existence. The man in the gospel was healed and able to see things around him. His cure was not just so he could distinguish tables and chairs or to see people and the countryside. He was able to see Jesus as the Messiah. The once blind man, now miraculously healed, saw a new reality. After meting Jesus he said, “I do believe Lord.”

As our Elect (Shih Lan Li) approaches the Sacraments of Initiation at Easter, we pray the Lord open her eyes to His presence in her life and our world. We pray the Second Scrutiny this Sunday that she may see and know our Savior. “Awake O sleeper, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

Lenten Project

A Friendly Place ~ Day Center for Homeless Women
Collection Dates: All Masses on March 21st and 22nd

St. Dunstan T.E.R.E.S.A. Committee requests all Parishioners and school families to, during Lent, consider donating to an organization called “A Friendly Place”. A Friendly Place is a day center located in Oakland for homeless women run by two Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The shelter receives no government funding and survives on private donations only. Because of these difficult times, A Friendly Place desperately needs donations to keep it operating. Just recently, vendors who provided coffee to it for years have discontinued doing so.At all Masses on March 21st and 22nd, the St. Dunstan T.E.R.E.S.A. Committee will be collecting the following much needed items: Paperback Books, Snacks, Magazines, Washcloths, Napkins, Paper Towels, Coffee, Tea, Toilet Paper Travel Sized Items: shampoo, soap, gel, toothpaste. Donations may also be dropped off at St. Dunstan School, 1150 Magnolia Ave during school hours: Mon-Fri from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM from February 25th (Ash Wednesday) to Friday, April 6th.

In April, Catholic Charities CYO San Carlos Services is offering a Family Caregiver Mini-Sabbatical. This 4 part series is for family members helping an older spouse, parent or sibling, especially someone with increasing memory loss or confusion. It is an opportunity to get some respite and relaxation while refreshing care-giving skills. Topics will include creating/preserving a support system for the caregiver, stress reduction techniques, communicating more effectively, improving care giving skills and handling more challenging behaviors. Sessions will be offered in San Carlos on Thursday afternoons in April from 3 –4:30 pm. $25 registration fee. Call Michael Vargas at 592-9325 or email mvargas@cccyo.org.
Thanks to all who participated in praying outside of Planned Parenthood to end abortion on March 11th. Volunteers are still needed as this will be ongoing through April 5th. The poster in the vestibule of the church has the website where you can sign up.
This weekend’s Second Collection is for Catholic Relief Services. When you donate to this collection you give hope to Jesus in Disguise, who reminds us that Christ is present in those who suffer, and those who respond compassionately to their needs. Please give generously.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Everyone 18 years of age and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

On these two days , the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

Parishioners are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent, and to attend Morning Prayer at 7:15 am, and one of the three daily Masses at 6:30 am, 8:00 am and 5:10 pm.

Stations of the Cross are held Fridays at 2:15 pm & 7 pm.

Last weekend’s Regular Collection: $7,918.00

Last weekend’s Parish Maintenance & Development Fund Collection: $7,864.00

This Weekend’s Second Collection is for Catholic Relief Services

Thank you for all your support!

Next weekend members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be stationed at the doors of the church after each Mass, taking up their 5th Sunday Collection. Please give generously. Your donations will help those in need in our parish area.
