Two weeks ago we sent our
catechumen, Shih Lan Li, to St.
Marys Cathedral for the
Rite of Election. She was just
one of nearly 200 who were called
by Archbishop Niederauer at the
Rite of Election. This Sunday she
moves closer to the celebration
of the Sacraments of Initiation
at Easter. Beginning this Sunday
and for the next two Sundays we
will celebrate the
scrutinies of the
elect. Scrutiny comes
from a Latin word that means,
worthless things,
rubbish. The word came to
be used to describe a careful
search so careful that it
even included a search of useless
debris.
During
Lent, the elect do some
soul-searching. They not only
reflect on the truth and
traditions of the faith, they now
take a critical look at their
lives. The scrutinies are
meant to uncover, then heal all
that is weak, defective, or
sinful in the hearts of the
elect; to bring out, then
strengthen all that is upright,
strong, and good. For the
scrutinies are celebrated in
order to deliver the elect from
the power of sin and Satan, to
protect them against temptation,
and to give them strength in
Christ, who is the way, the
truth, and the
life.
.the
elect are instructed gradually
about the mystery of sin, from
which the whole world and every
person longs to be delivered and
thus saved from its present and
future
consequences.
Second,
their spirit is filled with
Christ the Redeemer, who is the
living water (gospel of the
Samaritan woman in the first
scrutiny), the light of the world
(gospel of the man born blind in
the second scrutiny), the
resurrection and the life (gospel
of Lazarus is the third
scrutiny). From the first to the
final scrutiny the elect should
progress in their perception on
sin and their desire for
salvation.
We
are not at these scrutinies
simply to watch. We are invited
to think about our own life. The
prayers for the elect become
everyones intense prayer.
The purifying of the elect
becomes the purification of the
whole parish.

A Friendly Place ~ Day Center for Homeless
Women
Collection
Dates: All Masses on March 21st and
22nd
St.
Dunstan T.E.R.E.S.A. Committee requests
all Parishioners and school families to,
during Lent, consider donating to an
organization called A Friendly
Place. A Friendly Place is a day
center located in Oakland for homeless
women run by two Sisters of St. Joseph of
Carondelet. The shelter receives no
government funding and survives on private
donations only. Because of these difficult
times, A Friendly Place desperately needs
donations to keep it operating. Just
recently, vendors who provided coffee to
it for years have discontinued doing
so.At all
Masses on March 21st and 22nd, the St.
Dunstan T.E.R.E.S.A. Committee will be
collecting the following much needed
items:
Paperback Books, Snacks, Magazines,
Washcloths, Napkins, Paper Towels, Coffee,
Tea, Toilet Paper Travel Sized Items:
shampoo, soap, gel, toothpaste. Donations
may also be dropped off at St. Dunstan
School, 1150 Magnolia Ave during school
hours: Mon-Fri from 8:00 AM 4:00 PM
from February 25th (Ash Wednesday) to
Friday, April 6th.
In April, Catholic Charities CYO San
Carlos Services is offering a Family
Caregiver Mini-Sabbatical. This 4 part
series is for family members helping an
older spouse, parent or sibling,
especially someone with increasing memory
loss or confusion. It is an opportunity to
get some respite and relaxation while
refreshing care-giving skills. Topics will
include creating/preserving a support
system for the caregiver, stress reduction
techniques, communicating more
effectively, improving caregiving skills
and handling more challenging behaviors.
The sessions will be offered in San Carlos
on Thursday afternoons in April from 3
4:30 pm. $25 registration fee. For
more information call Michael Vargas at
592-9325 or email mvargas@cccyo.org.
On March 22, the Holy Father will be
visiting and praying with the people of
Africa. March 22 is also International
World Water Day, an annual event to focus
worldwide attention on the importance of
water. More than 1.1 billion people lack
access to safe water and 2.6 billion
people lack even basic sanitary
facilities. According to a 2006 report
from the United Nations, a child dies from
a water related disease every 15 seconds.

please go to setoninstitutue.org.

LENTEN
REGULATIONS
Everyone 14 years of age
and older is bound to abstain
from meat on Ash Wednesday, the
Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.
Everyone 18 years of age and
older but under the age of 60 is
also bound to fast Ash Wednesday
and Good Friday.
On these two days , the law
of fast allows only one full meal
a day, but does not prohibit
taking some food during the day,
so long as this does not
constitute another full meal.
Drinking liquids during the day
is permitted.
When health or ability to
work would be seriously affected,
the law does not oblige. In doubt
concerning fast or abstinence, a
priest assigned to pastoral
ministry or confessor should be
consulted. In the spirit of
penance, the faithful should not
lightly excuse themselves from
this obligation.
Parishioners are
encouraged to receive the
Sacrament of Reconciliation
during Lent, and to attend
Morning Prayer at 7:15 am, and
one of the three daily Masses at
6:30 am, 8:00 am and 5:10
pm.
Stations of the Cross
are held Fridays at 2:15 pm &
7 pm.
