Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
First Sunday of Lent
March 1st, 2009 - Bulletin

Your ways, O LORD, make known to me; teach me your paths.

— Psalm 25:4

This first Sunday of Lent the Church invites us to journey into the desert with Jesus, as we begin our preparation for Easter. Mark’s short account in today’s Gospel says Jesus was, “put to the test there by Satan. He was with wild beasts, and angles waited on him.” It is a time for each of us to confront the wild beasts in our hearts, like pride, envy, greed, vengeance or whatever we might be harboring Christ calls us to “repent, and believe in the gospel”. In the company of Jesus we are called to re-think, re-form and re-shape our lives.

This “joyful season” is a time for us to get back to basics, to replenish the soil in which our Christian faith grows. To reflect on the very nature of who we are, and what it means to be a Christian today. At the core of our being Christ has claimed us. This is the truth of who we are and why we can pray, “each year you give us this joyful season when we prepare to celebrate the Paschal Mystery with mind and heart renewed.”

This is not about making New Year resolutions in March. It is about ashes and the cross. It’s about money, food, and how we spend our time. It’s about sin and sorrow. It’s about life and death. It’s about Christ’s life death and resurrection.

Fasting and self-denial, together with prayer and almsgiving, keep us growing in Christ as we approach to celebrate the central mystery of our faith; the death and resurrection of Christ our savior.

Friday, March 6 is the First Friday of the month. There will be a Holy Hour in the church from 4-5 PM followed by Mass at 5:10 PM.
Saturday, March 7 is the First Saturday of the month. There will be a Holy Hour of Reparation from 7 to 8 AM in the church followed by Mass at 8 AM.

St. Dunstan T.E.R.E.S.A. Committee Lenten Project
A Friendly Place ~ Day Center for Homeless Women
Collection Dates: All Masses on March 21st and 22nd

St. Dunstan T.E.R.E.S.A. Committee requests all Parishioners and school families to, during Lent, consider donating to an organization called “A Friendly Place”. A Friendly Place is a day center located in Oakland for homeless women run by two Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The shelter receives no government funding and survives on private donations only. Because of these difficult times, A Friendly Place desperately needs donations to keep it operating. Just recently, vendors who provided coffee to it for years have discontinued doing so. At all Masses on March 21st and 22nd, the St. Dunstan T.E.R.E.S.A. Committee will be collecting the following much needed items: Paperback Books, Snacks, Magazines, Washcloths, Napkins, Paper Towels, Coffee, Tea, Toilet Paper Travel Sized Items: shampoo, soap, gel, toothpaste. Donations may also be dropped off at St. Dunstan School, 1150 Magnolia Ave during school hours: Mon-Fri from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM from February 25th (Ash Wednesday) to Friday, April 6th.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE

Christians throughout San Mateo are invited to take part in the national 40 Days for Life effort this Lent from February 25 through April 5. In addition to 40 days of prayer and fasting to end abortion in America, please consider volunteering to pray outside of Planned Parenthood, 2211 Palm Avenue, San Mateo, for one or more hours during our vigil there from 7 am to 7 pm throughout the 40 days, and ask a friend or two to join you! St. Dunstan Parish is asking for volunteers to participate in this effort on Wednesday, March 11th. For more information call Connie Fry at 697-9357.

Next week is Catholic Charities CYO “Loaves & Fishes” Sunday. Catholic Charities CYO receives no funding from the Archdiocese Annual Appeal or directly from the Archdiocese, so let’s support quality social services in our community by donating as generously as possible to help Catholic Charities CYO reach its spring goal of $300,000. Every dollar contributed directly supports programs that provide relief for homeless families, ailing seniors, immigrants, the working poor, troubled teens and many other clients in need.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.

Everyone 18 years of age and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

On these two days , the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation. Parishioners are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent, and to attend Morning Prayer at 7:15 am, and one of the three daily Masses at 6:30 am, 8:00 am and 5:10 pm.

Stations of the Cross are held Fridays at 2:15 pm & 7 pm.

Last weekend’s Regular Collection: $8,864.00

Next weekend’s Second Collection is for Catholic Charities Loaves & Fishes Sunday

Thank you for all your support!
