Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 22nd, 2009 - Bulletin

It is I, I, who wipe out, for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no more.

— Isaiah 43:25

In today’s Gospel we hear of a man lowered through a roof into the presence of Jesus. The paralyzed man in the Gospel needed healing in body and spirit. The problem was, he couldn’t move, he couldn’t get to Jesus. So his friends did for him what he couldn’t do for himself: they carried him to the place where Jesus could heal him. They were determined and went to extraordinary lengths. They climbed up on the roof, made an opening and carefully lowered him into Jesus’ presence. As always, when in the presence of Jesus, miraculous things happen. His friends could only bring him so far; it was up to Jesus to do the rest. And he did so, in a way never done before. He looked with compassion on the paralytic and spoke powerful words: “My son your sins are forgiven.” He then confirmed the power of his words by a miracle. He said to the man, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk again.”

The word of Jesus is true, it does what he says.

We have to go back to the beginning of the Old Testament to hear such creating words. “God said let there be light and there was light.” When God spoke it came into being. In Jesus, God is doing something new. Never before had anyone heard words of forgiveness like those of Jesus. The man must have been excited and delighted to regain his ability to walk. He must have been even more excited to know his sins were forgiven.

The words of forgiveness spoken to the paralytic are with us in the sacrament of reconciliation. We are all paralyzed by some type of sin and need the healing words of Jesus.

Maybe we have to lower ourselves in the presence of Jesus and ask for healing.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.

Everyone 18 years of age and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

On these two days , the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

Parishioners are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent, and to attend Morning Prayer at 7:15 am, and one of the three daily Masses at 6:30 am, 8:00 am and 5:10 pm.

Stations of the Cross are held Fridays at 2:15 pm & 7 pm.
