Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 15th, 2009 - Bulletin

Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

— 1 Corinthians 10:31

In this week’s gospel reading, a man afflicted with leprosy came to Jesus, knelt down in front of Him, and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” The man had some form of leprosy, a frightening condition for him and the people around him.

The ancient world was terrified of leprosy. By Jewish law the sufferer was isolated totally from society: “The leper...shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head hang loose, and he shall cover his upper lip and cry, ‘Unclean, unclean’. He shall dwell alone in a habitation outside the camp” (Leviticus 13:45). No leper would ever have the audacity to approach a person let alone a rabbi. The leper in this story approached Jesus confidently for help. This was exceptional, but even more extraordinary was what followed: “Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him....” That touch healed him. It healed also his feeling that he not only had a disease but he was a disease. This touch of Jesus healed his isolation, his loneliness, his despair, and his belief that he was cursed by God.

The leper broke the Law in approaching Jesus, and Jesus in turn broke the Law to reach and touch the afflicted man. The joy of this story is that we can approach the Lord no matter what our condition or circumstances. The Lord does not set preconditions when we approach Him in faith. The sad news is that some believe they have to be good before we can approach the Lord. This unfortunately is a belief of many people; they are so bad they feel they are beyond the reach of Jesus. The good news is that we can approach the Lord no matter what our condition or circumstances.
