[The
LORD] tells the number of the stars
and calls them by name.

Psalm
147:4

Simons mother-in-law is
sick. Her friends, who also
happen to be the friends of
Jesus, tell him about her. Jesus,
without hesitation, grasps her
hand and cures her. She in turn
gets up and waits on
them.
When
there is somebody sick whom you
know and care about, you
naturally want to do something.
Besides providing comfort,
support and friendship, you want
to provide spiritual help. As a
follower and friend of Jesus you
ask for his help and pray for the
sick person. You bring that
person to Jesus in prayer;
confident he will hear the prayer
made on behalf of the sick
person. In a very real way when
you ask Jesus to help a sick
person, you repeat/relive the
Gospel of today.
Christ
did not analyze the type of
sickness, or give an explanation
of what caused it, or even
attempt to explain why
Simons mother-in-law was
sick. Christ does not explain why
people suffer.
Jesus
knew he couldnt possibly
heal all the illness in the
world. No matter how many people
gathered at the door
there would always be more
suffering people, like Job who
longed for his healing touch.
Like Job in our first reading
this Sunday, people can question
why they suffer and seek an
explanation and never find an
answer. Job never did get a
satisfactory answer, but he never
wavered in his belief in the
goodness of God.
Sometimes
when there is sickness, or
suffering, all that we can do is
cry. Maybe there is anger and
resentment towards God. I feel it
is better to rant and rave at
God, to get angry, than walk away
from him. In the midst of
those

Help Us
Fight FOCA!
The
Catholic bishops of the United States
unanimously have called us to prayer and
action to prevent passage of the radical
Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)!
If passed into law, FOCA would force
taxpayers to fund abortion and eliminate
regulations that protect women from unsafe
abortion clinics. FOCA subjects women to
abortions by non-physicians and violates
the conscience rights of nurses, doctors,
and hospitals. Call the U.S. Capitol
switchboard to contact the offices of your
Representative and two Senators, Dianne
Feinstein and Barbara Boxer @
202-224-3121. For more resources please
see nchla.org.
