Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 1st, 2009 - Bulletin

Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us.

— Psalm 95:6

During his ministry, Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons. In this weekend’s Gospel Jesus drives out an unclean spirit of a man in the Synagogue. Strangely, (or a literary device of Mark?) the unclean spirit gives us a sermon – “you are the Holy One of God”. Jesus is identified for who he really is, not just a miracle worker, or a teacher, or Rabbi, but the Holy one of God.

The ancient world was locked in a struggle between God and the powers of evil. Their world was perceived as being populated by a wide variety of spirits, most of whom were threatening to the well being of people. Modern man with his knowledge and sophistication has left God and spirits behind. He believes he is able to explain away all the ancient beliefs with science and technology. However we are still locked in a struggle with evil in our world.

And there is evil in our world. All we have to do is read the daily newspapers, listen to the radio or watch the horrors of the world unfold before us as we watch the nightly telecast. There are malevolent powers and unclean spirits at work in our war-weary world.

Wherever there is armed conflict, violence, discrimination, injustice, abuse, torture, mutilation, starvation, and any kind of inhuman behavior, today’s unclean spirits are at work. We need to hear again the authoritative voice of Jesus say, “Come out!”

"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." We are called not merely to be good people; we are called to be Christians. We are to be His voice in our world today and speak out against the evil forces of

our time.

Help Us Fight FOCA!

The Catholic bishops of the United States unanimously have called us to prayer and action to prevent passage of the radical “Freedom of Choice Act” (FOCA)! If passed into law, FOCA would force taxpayers to fund abortion and eliminate regulations that protect women from unsafe abortion clinics. FOCA subjects women to abortions by non-physicians and violates the conscience rights of nurses, doctors, and hospitals.

Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard to contact the offices of your Representative and two Senators, Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer @202-224-3121. For more resources please see nchla.org.
