Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Second Sunday of Ordinary Time
January 18th, 2009 - Bulletin

Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you.

— 1 Corinthians 6:19a

On Tuesday, Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. I ask that we all pray for him and his new administration; that they be attentive to Holy Spirit and work for the true good of the Nation. They are called to lead and govern not only by the democratic choice of the people but also, I believe, by the grace of God, for God is the ruler of all nations.

In our Scripture readings this weekend we hear the stories of “call”. The Lord calls Samuel and Jesus calls the first disciples. Once these people heard the call, and understood even a little of whom it was that called them, their response was total: “Here I am”. They did not know where their journey would take them. There was no guarantee of safety and comfort in response to the call. They accepted the invitation, trusting in the person who called them.

Samuel and the first disciples stand for all of us. Like them, we may not be important in the eyes of society but none of us is ever ignored by God. We are always in his mind and forever under his care. He is constantly calling us into an ever-deeper relationship with him. The first call came at baptism and it has been renewed ever since in all the varied circumstances of our lives. In the noisy world in which we live, there is a danger of God’s voice being drowned out and not heard. If we listen, we can hear him as calls us today to ‘come and see’.

I pray that the new administration see the Lord in the joys and hopes, the enthusiasm and energy of the able-bodied and at the soup kitchen where He is hungry, as He sleeps rough in the wet and cold, as He lays sick in hospital, or is abandoned or left at home alone.
