All
kings shall pay him homage, all nations
shall serve him.
|
|
|
|
Psalm 72:11
|
|
|
|
|
Herod was one of historys
great tyrants: he spared no one,
not even his own family; to keep
his grip on power he murdered his
wife, three of his sons, his
brother-in-law, an uncle, and his
mother-in-law. When Herod of the
quest of the magi He was
frightened, and all Jerusalem
with him. He was not going
to tolerate a rival. Although he
was a tyrannical ruler, the
religious leaders colluded with
him in locating the infant.
Knowing Herods taste for
blood, its a strange
fellowship. A sign of things to
come?
The
Magi, who came in search of the
new born king, were
foreigners, pagans, and
astrologers: everything that was
despicable in the eyes of the
religious authorities. Tradition
calls them kings -
judging, probably, by the wealth
of the gifts they brought. They
followed a star and not the
advise of human authority. The
Magi came to a stable or a cave
where they found a poor family,
with animals and perhaps a few
shepherds. All the appearances
would have told them they had
made a ridiculous mistake, yet
falling to their knees,
they did him
homage.
It
is these strangers, outsiders and
wise people who catch sight of
the star. They come searching,
wanting to offer gifts and
homage, and to meet the newborn
king.
They
offer their gifts and give him
their hearts. They in turn are
given gifts and are changed. They
cannot retrace their paths; there
is no going back to old ways.
They find a new way home
another way to live, another way
to belong, another way to show
forth the glory of
God.
We
are all beckoned to the stable,
to be humbled by God. And He
forever calls us to see Him in
the most unpredictable of places
in the most unexpected
company.
