“They have kept your word.”

— John 17:6b

Saying good-bye can often be very difficult, and yet it is a part of life from which we cannot escape. People constantly come into and go out of our lives. They often leave gaps that are seemingly impossible to fill. When a loved one dies we are usually filled with sadness and a deep loneliness. Even if we know that departure/death of a loved one is imminent we are never fully prepared. Going away always comes with sadness.

The Ascension seemed to come as a surprise to the Apostles. Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles recalls how the disciples, having witnessed the Ascension, stood looking at the sky. They did not comprehend what had happened. In recent weeks they had been ‘put through the ringer’. They had shared the happiness of their Master’s teaching and preaching on His journey to Jerusalem; they experienced the sorrow of His condemnation, the shame of His betrayal, the horror of His execution and the bliss of His Easter presence. Now he was taking leave of them, just as he said he would and they looked up to the sky in sadness and bewilderment.

They would remain, bewildered, confused and frightened for some time. The events that they witnessed – the life death and resurrection of Jesus did not make sense. They had gone through a lot together, some good times and some bad, but the best was yet to come. They were told not to leave Jerusalem but wait “for the promise of the Father”. The gift of the Holy Spirit is what makes sense of the life of Jesus. Without the Spirit, Jesus was a delusional character, the resurrection never occurred and the apostles remain forever befuddled by Jesus. The Spirit gives life and understanding.

The strange thing is that although he departed he remains, although he died he is alive and his Word goes out through the earth. His good-bye was “I will be with you always.”

As part of our Archdiocesan Missionary Cooperation Plan, at our May 4 weekend Masses, Sr. Irene Cullen, RSCJ, will speak on behalf of her Sisters in Uganda. The Religious of the Sacred Heart serve as God’s people in 44 countries around the world. In Uganda they work as social workers, nurses, counselors, parish ministers, and especially as Catholic educators in elementary, high school, and colleges. Special envelopes will be provided and you are invited to support their missionary effort as you feel inspired. Our contribution will make a big difference in this corner of God’s precious but struggling world and will help orphaned and vulnerable children go to school. Thank you.
