“I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink.”

— Matthew 25:35

This Sunday is the Feast of Christ the King. It brings to a close the Church’s year, and reminds us that when we die we will be judged. The king will sit in judgment and will reward and punish us according to how we lived.

The notion of monarchies and kings conjure up images of someone who is set apart and has absolute power and authority over his subjects.

This is not what we celebrate this Sunday. Christ the King does not separate us from himself but rather we unite ourselves with the King and his mission and commit ourselves to his kingdom. Jesus, our King, came not to be served but to serve; he came not to oppress but to free, heal, save and reconcile.

This in turn is the agenda of the followers of the king. Matthew’s gospel declares in strong language that the prerequisite for a follower of the King is to; feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, cloth the naked, comfort the sick, visit the imprisoned. The King is totally identified with his subjects; ‘as often as you did it for the least of my brothers you did it for me.’ To love our neighbor is to love our king. This is the measure by which we will be judged on the last day.

This feast forces us to reevaluate our notion of power and authority. The king is one whose power lies in his love and service, one who seeks out the lost, brings back the stray, binds up the injured and heals the sick. If power lies in service and working with the poor and neglected in our society then we have tremendous power. The path of glory leads beyond the grave to the kingdom prepared for us from the foundation of the world.
