Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 16th, 2008 - Bulletin

Blessed are you who fear the LORD.

— Psalm 128:1a

A mathematician, an accountant, and an economist apply for the same job. The interviewer calls in the mathematician and asks, “What does two plus two equal?” The mathematician replies, “Four.” The interviewer asks, “Four exactly?” The mathematician looks at the interviewer incredulously and says, “Yes, four exactly.”

Then the interviewer calls in the accountant and asks the same question: “What does two plus two equal?” The accountant says, “On average, four – give or take 10 percent – but on average, four.”

Then the interviewer calls in the economist and poses the same question: “What does two plus two equal?” The economist gets up, locks the door, closes the shade, sits down next to the interviewer, and says, “What do you want it to equal?” In the Gospel this weekend we hear the story of the “Talents”. The man in the story called his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. It appears to be a very loose arrangement, considering the sums of money involved. He gives each a different sum of money, each according to his ability. He puts his trust in them.

The first two servants return a profit and share in the Master’s joy. The third servant lived in fear of the Master. He justifies his inactivity by blaming the Master. The fault is not his. The servant accuses him of being a bully, who instills fear into people. He lived in dread of the Master.

If we see God as someone who is a bully, demanding and instilling fear in us, then we will always fail to flourish. We will blame others, God, the environment. The Lord sees wonderful gifts and talents in each of us. He believes we can do great things. He has faith in us. He has given us the talents; what do we make of them?

The Knights of Columbus would like to thank all the parishioners who donated to our Tootsie Roll Drive to benefit the mentally disabled. We raised over $1000 to be donated to area programs committed to assist the mentally disabled. We appreciate your generosity. We will continue to pray for you.
