Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome
November 9th, 2008 - Bulletin

The LORD of hosts is with us; our stronghold is the God of Jacob.

— Psalm 46:8

St. John Lateran is the Cathedral of Rome, the mother of all churches in Rome and in the world. In the early centuries Christianity was outlawed in Rome and many Christians in Rome suffered martyrdom. The Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity and the famous Edict of Milan in 313 AD allowed Christians to practice their religion in public. This church given by Constantine, during the time of Pope Sylvester. It has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. The current church dates from the 17th century. It is, if you like, the Pope’s home church. One might think St. Peter’s is the head of all the churches but in fact it is the Church of St. John Lateran. Every bishop has a cathedral and the Pope’s cathedral is the Church of St. John Lateran not the Basilica of St. Peter.

We celebrate today the Dedication of the Church of St. John Lateran in Rome because it is the head and mother church of all churches in the world. On the façade of the basilica there is an inscription in Latin which reads, “the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world.”

On this anniversary of the dedication of the church, we join our hearts and prayers with those of our chief Shepherd, the bishop of Rome, Pope Benedict.

The Church of Jesus Christ does not consist of buildings made of stone, or any other material, but of people. The church building as such has no special sanctity of its own but is holy because it is there that the people of God, the body of Christ, meet and worship.

The church is designed as a space for the celebration of the liturgy, and it is from it that the people of God must go out into the whole world to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.
