Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed
November 2nd, 2008 - Bulletin

If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him.

— Romans 6:8

This weekend we celebrate two feast days: All Saints and All Souls.

The celebration of All Saints gives us a peek into our eternal destiny. The saints we celebrate were men and women like us. Where we are now they used to be, and where they are now we hope to be someday. As Christians we know that a person's life story is not limited to what happens to them between the day they are born and the day they die.

That is why we do not simply forget people after they die. As we profess in the Creed, “We believe in the Communion of Saints,” - they live! Their departure from this life is not the end; for us believers ‘life is changed not ended’. In our mortal eyes they are dead and gone. But in the eyes of faith we know that they are alive now more than ever, because they are now fully alive in God. On this feast we remember the heroic lives of the unknown and for the most part unnamed people, anonymous men and women who lived the gospel message to the best of their ability and gifts.

But this weekend we also celebrate the Feast of All Souls. In the quite of our hearts we should not only remember the saints proclaimed by the Church but also the names of those who have gone before us. We stand on the shoulders of those people who have tried to live the faith. It is important to remember the faithful departed who passed on the faith to us; parents, grandparents, priest, sister, teacher, a neighbor, an unknown person that gave witness to Christ. Today we give thanks to God for all those who have helped us in our faith and we pray for them and for all the faithful departed.

MARRIAGE: BISHOP’S STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSITION 8

The issue before us with Proposition 8 is “Marriage” -an ancient yet modern, human institution which pre-exists both Church and government. Marriage, history shows us, is intrinsic to stable, flourishing and hospitable socities. Although cultural differences have occurred, what has never changed is that marriage is the ideal relationship between a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation and the continuation of the human race. We must support traditional marriage as the source of our civilization, the foundation for a society that can be home to all human beings, and the reflection of our relationship with God.
