If,
then, we have died with Christ, we believe
that we shall also live with
him.

Romans 6:8

|
The story was told some years ago
of a pastor who found the roads
blocked one Sunday morning and
was forced to skate on the river
to get to church, which he did.
When he arrived the elders of the
church were horrified that their
preacher had skated on the Lord's
Day. After the service they held
a meeting where the pastor
explained that it was either
skate to church or not go at all.
Finally one elder asked, "Did you
enjoy it?" When the preacher
answered, "No," the board decided
it was all right! In this
weeks gospel reading, the
Pharisees tried to trick Jesus by
asking, Which commandment
in the law is the greatest?
They werent just referring
to the Ten Commandments given to
Moses by God many centuries
earlier. By the time Jesus and
the Pharisees had this exchange
the Jewish law had been expanded
to 613 distinct commandments,
with 248 being affirmative
(You must do
)
and 365 being negative (You
must not
do
).
Jesus
said the entire law and the
prophets, all the hundreds of
rules and regulations, could be
summed up in two simple commands:
love God with all your heart, and
love your neighbor as
yourself.
Thats
it. You could put the whole Code
of Canon Law and all the
commentaries written about the
law on a business card. However
since we are sinful, we need
guidelines and limits. We need
some rules and regulations to
keep civilization from dissolving
into chaos. Rules are necessary,
but rules are not an end in
themselves.
Jesus
message this week is that we
should be guided by the spirit of
the law rather than the letter of
the law.
Gods
law is simple. Its based on
love. He created the universe and
humanity because of His abounding
love. All we need to do is love
Him and love His other creations.
Its that incredibly simple.
Yet, simple as it is, we keep
ignoring His
command.

MARRIAGE:
CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC
CHURCH
Crystallizing
the teaching on marriage, the Catechism of
the Catholic Church proclaims: God himself
is the author of marriage. The vocation to
marriage is written in the very nature of
man and woman as they came from the hand
of the Creator. Marriage is not a purely
human institution despite the many
variations it may have undergone through
the centuries in different cultures,
social structures, and spiritual
attitudes. The well-being of the
individual person and of both human and
Christian society is closely bound up with
the healthy state of conjugal and family
life.
