“Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.”

— Matthew 22:21

A taxpayer received a strongly worded "second notice" that his taxes were overdue. Hastening to the collector's office, he paid his bill, saying apologetically that he had overlooked the first notice.

"Oh," confided the collector with a smile, "we don't send out first notices. We have found that the second notices are more effective."

In this Sunday’s gospel, Jesus is being asked whether it is lawful to pay taxes to the Roman emperor or not. They want Jesus to incriminate himself. A simple “yes” or “no” answer is what is anticipated to their question. His fate hangs in the balance. One side is hoping he says, “Pay the tax” the other group hoping he says “withhold the tax”. Either way, it appears, Jesus cannot win.

A tax demand to pay is a command, not a polite request to pay when we find the time or when it is convenient to pay. There is a deadline to be met and after that there will be penalties to be paid. Nothing personal just business; give to the government what is its due.

God on the other hand is not so obvious or aggressive. He does not send a letter demanding we give him his due. He sends his Son. We can ignore him but if we do, he won’t send in the “heavy gang”. With God this is not business, this is personal. This is how he relates to each of us; always on a personal level.

Jesus surprised everyone by his answer. He did not fall into the trap set for him. He turned the question around and challenged his listeners as he challenges us. He did not feel the necessity to answer their question. He provoked them to answer the question themselves. How can we repay the Lord for all that he has done for us?

MARRIAGE INITIATIVE CALL US TO BE COUNTERCULTURAL

We are called to participate in the civic process as a means of witnessing the Gospel values of love, compassion and respect for all life. If we do this, the world will be a better place for all. That is why our church has taken such a strong position on the upcoming state ballot measure that will decide how marriage is defined in California. Like St. Paul, our care and concern extend beyond our existing Catholic communities. This is where the true importance of Proposition 8 lies-- in the precedent it would set for society. With the validation of law, this new definition of marriage will take root in our society, undermining God’s plan for creation.
-Bishop Gerald Barnes, San Bernardino
