Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
27th Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 5th, 2008 - Bulletin

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.

— Philippians 4:6

In the gospel of this weekend we have the parable of the wicked tenants. The tenant farmers had worked in the vineyard for a long while and hadn’t seen the real owner in all that time. It was easy for them to think that they were the owners and that they owed nothing to anybody. It was an illusion and ended in a miserable death for all of them. They misread the reality and suffered the consequences.

Are we laboring under the same illusion? The popular philosophy in some circles is that we are the masters of our own destiny; we answer to nobody, we own our world and all that is in it, we don’t have to answer to a higher authority. But as the story tells us, everything is a loan, from the lives we live to the air we breathe. We don’t own anything and we take nothing with us. God is the giver of everything.

We need no imagination at all to recognize the son in the parable is Jesus himself. Would Jesus coming into our world today receive the same fate as he did two thousand years ago as illustrated in the parable? We don’t need to use our imagination to answer that question. Our Christian faith tells us that Jesus is among us in the unwanted, the despised and the destitute members of our society. Jesus comes in the person of every child in the womb. He is trying to be born again in a world that believes it is autonomous and answerable to no one.

We have been entrusted with the vineyard to bear fruit for others. It is a great honor. It is also a great responsibility. May God protect us from killing the presence of the Son in the short period we are tenants of his vineyard.

WHAT DOES OUR FAITH TELL US ABOUT MARRIAGE?

Marriage comes from the loving hand of God, who fashioned both male and female in the divine image. Marriage is both a natural institution and a sacred union because it is rooted in the divine plan for creation. The Church teaches that the valid marriage of baptized Christians is a sacrament, a saving reality. Jesus Christ made marriage a symbol of His love for His Church. This means that a sacramental marriage lets the world see, in human terms, something of the faithful, creative, abundant and self-emptying love of Christ. A true marriage in the Lord with His grace will bring the spouses to holiness. Their love, manifested in fidelity, fertility, generosity, sacrifice, forgiveness, and healing, makes known God’s love in their family, community and society. This Christian meaning confirms and strengthens the human value of a marital union.
