Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus.

— Philippians 2:5

An associate pastor, new to the parish, sees the need to start a Bible study group where people could learn to read the word of God and deepen their faith. After service one morning, he presents the idea to the people and receives a unanimous and enthusiastic feedback. “It is a wonderful idea,” they all say. Then the young associate pastor goes and tells the pastor that the people are happy with the idea of starting a Bible class. The older and more experienced pastor tells the associate to rephrase the question and consult the people again. The following day the young priest asks the same congregation, “Who would like to sign up for the Bible study group? Only four hands go up. Then it dawns on the young man that saying yes to an idea is one thing and doing what is required is another.

There are echoes of the story of the Prodigal Son in this parable. Again we have two sons, one of whom seems to be the good and dutiful son. But like the one who stayed at home in the parable of the Prodigal Son, and this son who promised to do what his fathers told him, there is something lacking in both of them. The heart plays false. In the story of the Prodigal Son the “dutiful son” who stayed at home could not forgive his brother; in this story the “dutiful son” made false promises and deceived his father. Jesus makes his point clear: Good intentions are not enough. And promises don't count unless they are performed. God wants to change our hearts so that we will show by our speech and by our actions that we respect his will and we are ready to do what he commands. Christianity is not simply an intellectual assent to a series of doctrines but the living in our lives the faith we profess. The follow through on our promise is always the hard part.

What is Marriage?

Marriage, as instituted by God, is a faithful, exclusive, lifelong union of a man and a woman joined in an intimate community of life and love. They commit themselves completely to each other and to the wondrous responsibility of bringing children into the world and caring for them. The call to marriage is woven deeply into the human spirit. Man and woman are equal. However, as created, they are different from but made for each other. This complementarity draws them together in a mutually loving union that should be always open to the procreation of children. These truths about marriage are present in the order of nature and can be perceived by the light of human reason. They have been confirmed by Divine Revelation and in Sacred Scripture.
