Turn to the LORD for mercy; to our God, who is generous in forgiving.

— Isaiah 55:7b

A socialist once came to see an enormously wealthy man and soon was railing against the injustice of one person having so much money. In his view, wealth was meant to be divided equally. The wealthy man asked his secretary for an assessment of everything he owned and at the same time looked up the figures on world population. He did a little arithmetic on a pad and then said to his secretary. "Give this gentleman l6 cents. That's his share of my wealth."

"My thoughts are not your thoughts, my ways are not your ways – it is the Lord who speaks." This is from the first reading at today's Mass and could be a summary of the gospel. The parable is provocative and questions our openhandedness. The men who had worked all day received a normal day's wages: one denarius. But they believed that the men who had worked less than they would receive less, particularly those who had worked only one hour. But they received the same amount! They complained bitterly, but the employer replied, "Are you envious because I am generous?" In today’s world any business that practiced this economic policy would go to the wall very quickly.

It is an unfair and anger-provoking parable! God is not playing fair! Everybody is treated the same. But we have to remember this is a parable, not about money, or “labor relations” but God’s inclusive love. It shows the extraordinary generosity and compassion of God. In Jesus' times laborers had to wait each day in the marketplace until someone hired them for a day's job. No work that day usually meant no food on the family table. Our God calls us everyday but we don’t always hear or heed his call. If somebody responds at the last moment who are we to complain? We should rejoice and be glad. Our God gives only gifts and not what we deserve.
