Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Christ
Jesus . . . emptied himself, taking the
form of a slave, coming in human
likeness.

Philippians 2:7

Lift
high the cross, the love of
Christ proclaim / Till all the
world adore his sacred
name.
This popular hymn beautifully
expresses our sentiments as we
celebrate today the feast of the
Exaltation of the Cross. The hymn
can be found in our Music Issue,
hymn #724.
In
this weekends gospel we
listen in on the conversation
between Jesus and Nicodemus.
Nicodemus has come by night to
try to figure out Jesus and Jesus
in turn tries to lead him into
the way of the spirit, not the
flesh. Nicodemus wants facts,
logic, and clarity. Jesus speaks
to him on the level of faith.
Knowing that Nicodemus is
familiar with Scripture, Jesus
recalls Moses lifting up
the bronze serpent in the desert.
Using this historical event,
Jesus reveals that he also will
be lifted up so that those who
look, in faith, upon him will
receive eternal life. Jesus will
be lifted up on the
cross.
Crucifixion
was vicious and horrible death
and a reminder to onlookers of
what to expect if they threatened
Roman authority. It was reserved
for the worst of criminals, and a
means of showing extreme contempt
for the condemned. The suffering
and humiliation of a Roman
crucifixion were unequaled. It
was a horrific way to die. Today
the sign of the cross has become
a universal Christian symbol. It
is not just a piece of decorative
wood or metal jewelry. It is a
symbolic summary of the
suffering, death and resurrection
of Christ by which we have been
redeemed. The Cross is a symbol
of our faith in the crucified and
risen one, our Lord Jesus Christ.
He paid the price of our
redemption with his life.
He came to pay a debt He
didn't owe because we owed a debt
we couldn't pay. He
proclaims his love for us from
the cross.
