All you who are thirsty, come to the water!

— Isaiah 55:1a

A little boy called at the house of a retired gentleman and offered some picture postcards for sale at 10 cents each.

“What are you going to do with the money?” he asked the boy.

“I’m raising one million dollars for the earthquake relief,” he answered gravely.

The child was so tiny and the sum of money so large that the gentleman laughed.

“One million dollars’? He said. “Do you expect to raise it all by yourself?”

“No, sir” he replied solemnly. “There’s another little boy helping me.”

The words in today’s gospel remind us of the words for the consecration of the Eucharistic bread and wine: He took bread, looked up to heaven, blessed, broke and gave it to them. The Eucharist, as the mystery, provides the setting and attitude for responding to God in our trials and temptations, in our thirst and hunger. In the Eucharist we are not alone but united with the entire church. In the Eucharist we ask for forgiveness and we forgive others their offenses against us. Most of all, in the Eucharist we confess our faith that it is the Lord Jesus who cares for us each moment of our daily life.

The Eucharist does not absolve us for doing nothing. Jesus, in this episode told them “give them some food yourselves.’ The Eucharist generates responsibility for others. We are family when we celebrate and not the private individuals gathered in the same church building. We are family and caregivers, comforters and challengers of the world we live in. When one member is hurting all are hurting. Blood poured out is not just for me alone it is blood poured out for all.

I have to put in my 10cents worth and together with all the others we can make a tremendous difference.

From the Office of Religious Education and Youth Ministry

We are looking for volunteers to join our team of catechists in the rewarding ministry of working with the children in our parish. If you have been thinking of becoming more involved in a church ministry--please consider volunteering in our Religious Education Program. Catechists are needed for the following grade levels--Kindergarten, First and Second. Our classes are held on Tuesday afternoon's from 3:45-5:00p.m. and will begin in September. Training sessions are available as well as materials that explain the textbooks as well as lesson plans.

The St. Dunstan School of Religious Education is an important part of the St. Dunstan Parish community. We are dedicated in providing our students with a desire to share in the adventure of faith, learning, liturgy and life. Our programs provide faith formation for children to grow in love, knowledge, appreciation and desire to become active members of the Catholic Church.

It is our hope that you will give consideration to the idea of becoming one of our volunteers and share with us your time, talent and your prayers. For more information, please contact the Director of Religious Education--Sheree Leone at (650) 697-7451 or stdunstanccd@att.net.
