All things work for good for those who love God.

— Romans 8:28a

Two old buddies were having a beer, and one of them was looking very poorly. “I’ve got domestic troubles,” he groaned. His friend was surprised. “I thought you said your wife was a pearl.” “Yes she is. It’s the mother of pearl that’s the problem.” Not the pearl the man was looking for in the Gospel. How do you find something you’re not looking for? You don’t. The man in today’s Gospel found the treasure because he was looking for it. The merchant found the fine pearl because he was looking for it. Both men found something they were looking for and did what they had to do to buy it.

Today we might think of an antique buff that knows Victorian furniture. He looks for original pieces every time he stops at an antique store. One day he sees a chair that he recognizes as an original. He asks the price and when informed the buyer knows that it is more valuable than the storekeeper is asking for it. He hurries to his bank to get the money he needs, races back and seals the deal before anyone can make a better offer. He knows that he is getting a good deal for the price he is paying.

The intention of this gospel is to speak of the kingdom of God as the supreme value to be preferred above all else. A person would even cheat (by hiding the treasure) in order to acquire some treasure trove of the owner’s field in which it was found. The kingdom of God is such great value that the most drastic action is worth taking to gain it. One of the encouraging aspects of this gospel story is that such treasure can be found in ordinary places. God is constantly speaking to us in the simplicity of our lives. What we have got to do is open our eyes to his presence and search for him in the bits and pieces of everyday happenings. Do we recognize a good deal when we see it?

From the Office of Religious Education and Youth Ministry

We are looking for volunteers to join our team of catechists in the rewarding ministry of working with the children in our parish. If you have been thinking of becoming more involved in a church ministry--please consider volunteering in our Religious Education Program. Catechists are needed for the following grade levels--Kindergarten, First and Second. Our classes are held on Tuesday afternoon's from 3:45-5:00p.m. and will begin in September. Training sessions are available as well as materials that explain the textbooks as well as lesson plans.

The St. Dunstan School of Religious Education is an important part of the St. Dunstan Parish community. We are dedicated in providing our students with a desire to share in the adventure of faith, learning, liturgy and life. Our programs provide faith formation for children to grow in love, knowledge, appreciation and desire to become active members of the Catholic Church.

It is our hope that you will give consideration to the idea of becoming one of our volunteers and share with us your time, talent and your prayers. For more information, please contact the Director of Religious Education--Sheree Leone at (650) 697-7451 or stdunstanccd@att.net.
