“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”

— Matthew 11:28

Reading the Gospel for this weekend I though it would be a good idea to lookup the word ‘yoke’. It is a word used in the gospel but maybe not all of us are familiar with what a yoke is. Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me …..” Yoke: a wooden frame with a bar put across the necks of two animals to hold them together so that they can be worked as a team. (Collins English Dictionary) There are other definitions of a yoke but I like this one the best.

It always takes a pair to work a yoke. We say a ‘yoke of oxen’ not a ‘yoke of ox’. The yoke is made for more than one neck or pair of shoulders. When Jesus asks us to take the yoke, we have to be aware that we do not pull alone. Our companion/helper is none other than Jesus himself. It is his yoke (take my yoke) and we are invited to take it upon ourselves. Jesus invites us to team up with him. He does not leave us to our own devices and plough away on our own. The yoke of Christ is not just a yoke from Christ but also a yoke with him. To take the yoke of Christ is to associate and identify ourselves with him: our destiny with his destiny, our vision with his vision and our mission with his mission. It is to know that we are not pulling the yoke alone and by our power but together with Christ and by the strength that comes from him. It is to know that Jesus is not just a teacher or somebody giving instructions but also a friend who is at the heart of everything we do. He pulls with us and for us.

Parishioners, as a courtesy to others, please silence your cell phones during all Masses.
Your cooperation is appreciated.
