the ends of the world, their
message.

Psalm 19:5

|
A man died and approached the
Pearly Gates. St. Peter told him
heaven was getting crowded so he
had to test people with the point
system. If he got to 100 points
he could enter. The man told
Peter that he gave to the poor.
Peter marked him down for 3
points. The man thought again,
and said that he tithed. Peter
added one point. The man,
desperately searching his memory,
finally said that he never
cussed. Peter added 1/2 a point.
By now the man got very
frustrated and said that at this
rate he could only get in by the
grace of God. Peter replied,
"Come on in!"
This
weekend we honor Peter and Paul.
Two great men of the early
Church! They were called by
Christ to be Apostles. I wonder
if they had to pass a test by
human standards would they pass?
Knowing a little of their
personalities would they qualify
today for positions of leadership
in the Church?
Peter
is portrayed as a coward and a
man with his own agenda. He did
not want Jesus to go to Jerusalem
and die. He professed that he
would stand by Jesus in his time
of trial and even die with him.
When the time came, he denied
knowing Jesus. So much for brave
words!
Saul
went along with the stoning of St
Stephen and persecuted the
Church. There was no love lost
between Saul and the early
Christians. After his conversion
on the road to Damascus Paul was
intransigent, believing he was
right and Peter wrong. They
continued to disagree on the
direction of the early Church.
Paul thought Peter weak when he
vacillated in his practice of the
Jewish dietary laws. Both were
very human with feelings and
emotions, convictions, strengths
and weaknesses. They were great
men but they became great by the
grace of God.
