Matthew 10:8b

In todays Gospel, Jesus
sends his disciples on a mission.
He was preparing them to take
over when he would no longer be
with them. They were to be Christ
to others. As Saint Teresa of
Avila wrote: Christ has no
body now on earth but yours. No
hands but yours. Yours are the
eyes through which he pours out
compassion on the world.
The responsibility of handing on
the faith rests with all of us
but especially with parents.
Parents cannot foist it on
others, be they priest, teacher
or catechist. There is a
beautiful prayer at the end of
the baptismal liturgy that
expresses this truth very well:
God is the giver of all
life, human and divine. May he
bless the father of this child.
He and his wife will be the first
teachers of their child in the
ways of faith. Parents are
the first teachers and the best
teachers.
A
little boy of five was left alone
with his father at bedtime. It
had never happened before. After
some maneuvering and a lot of
fun, the father finally got the
little fellow into his
nightclothes, and was about to
lift him into bed when the child
said, But Daddy, I have to
say my
prayers.
He
knelt down beside the bed, joined
his hands, raised his eyes to
heaven and prayed: Now I
lay me down to sleep, I pray the
Lord my soul to keep; if I should
die before I wake, I pray the
Lord my soul to keep. That
was his usual prayer. But tonight
he looked up at his dad, then
raised his eyes to heaven and
prayed, Dear God, make me
great, big, and good like my
daddy. Amen.
In
a moment he was in bed, and in
five minutes asleep. And then the
father knelt by his sons
bedside and prayed, Dear
Lord, make me a great, big and
good man like my boy thinks I
am.
Happy
Fathers Day!

Millbraes
Helping Hands
is a group of women who crochet lap robes
and shoulderettes for residents of local
nursing homes. Recently the local AARP of
Millbrae, which funded Helping Hands,
closed. We are in need of yarn to continue
our projects which included crocheting
birthday gifts for the residents of Serra
Nursing Home, and small decorations for
Easter and Christmas. If you have any
unused yarn in your homes, we would
appreciate your donation. We would be glad
to pick up. Please call Colleen McClelland
at 259-9807, or Helen Perez at 589-7194 if
you have any yarn you would like to
donate. Thank you.
