Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
June 8th, 2008 Bulletin

“I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”—

Matthew 9:13

An intriguing, two-line ad appeared in a local paper. It read: “For sale: One pine coffin, unused, $400.00. Changed plans! Plans change, and life confronts us with unexpected turns in the road. Matthew was sitting at the customs post and when Jesus called him he was changed forever.

Matthew was employed by the Romans and earned his living as a tax collector working for the occupying power. Being a tax collector was a way to make lots of money, but there was a price to pay. To qualify for the job one had to be a despicable person, completely corrupt and without a shred of human kindness. Nothing stood in the way of gathering taxes and making a profit; not appealing to a sense of justice or begging for mercy. Kindhearted people did not apply for this profession. The people in turn, treated the tax collectors with hatred and regarded them as criminals, unclean and shunned their company. They were fellow countrymen turned traitors they were beneath contempt. And then Jesus came calling.

Horror of horrors! Jesus must be mistaken! How could he even bid him the time of day? Jesus was not stupid; he knew who was sitting at the customs post, knew his occupation, knew he was a fellow country, and knew what others thought of him.

Jesus saw what others did not see. He saw beyond the outward appearance, beyond the corrupt exterior and saw potential for goodness. Jesus’ call awakened in Matthew the possibility for greatness. Matthew saw himself as Jesus did, not as the people saw him. Matthew knew in his heart of hearts that he was more than a corrupt, coldhearted, and unjust money-grabbing traitor. Matthew liked what Jesus saw. We can condemn others and we can even condemn ourselves, but Christ sees something great and wonderful in us. When Jesus comes calling our life changes!

Millbrae’s Helping Hands is a group of women who crochet lap robes and shoulderettes for residents of local nursing homes. Recently the local AARP of Millbrae, which funded Helping Hands, closed. We are in need of yarn to continue our projects which included crocheting birthday gifts for the residents of Serra Nursing Home, and small decorations for Easter and Christmas. If you have any unused yarn in your homes, we would appreciate your donation. We would be glad to pick up. Please call Colleen McClelland at 25-9807, or Helen Perez at 589-7194 if you have any yarn you would like to donate. Thank you.

Five Finger Prayer
  1. Your thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C.S. Lewis once said, a ”sweet duty.”

  2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors and clergy. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers.

  3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God’s guidance.

  4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger; as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.

  5. And lastly comes our little finger; the smallest finger of all, which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, “the least shall be the greatest among you.” Your pinky should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.
