Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
June 1st, 2008 Bulletin

“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.”

— Matthew 7:24

It is said that words are cheap. They are easy to say but to live in accord with them is another matter. The first reading of this weekend tells us to “Take these words of mine into your heart and soul…let them be a pendant on your forehead” We are called to put the words into practice and not just an outward show, not said for the occasion but a lived reality.

When young couples come for marriage preparation I always tell them that the ceremony in church is very brief. I remind them that with all the excitement leading up to the day and their nervousness on the day that everything appears to happen very fast. I explain to them that their exchange of vows is over in a matter of seconds: “I take you for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health till death.” The challenging part of course is to live the words they have spoken, to live the sacrament. The words, spoken in an instant, require a lifetime of fidelity. We wear Christian symbols – scapulars, medals, and crosses as signs of devotion. Wearing them does not make us Christian. The Cross does not possess magic; the Miraculous Medal does not possess supernatural power. We wear them close to our heart as a reminder that our religion is not a matter of merely saying words but a matter of the heart.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven,” a frightening prospect. The outward trappings don’t count for much. What the Lord wants is more than mouthing words as surely as the couple who exchange vows need to put into action the words spoken to each other. Talk isn’t cheap when our words match our actions.
