Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Pentecost Sunday
May 11th, 2008 Bulletin

There appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.

— Acts 2:3

Reflecting about Pentecost got me thinking about mobile phones.

There is an advertisement on TV for a wireless phone company (which shall remain nameless). It is quite clever and very simple. It is the “Test Man”. The ad features the Test Man roaming the country through wheat fields, across snowy mountains, through airports, along highways, seeking the best possible signal. His punch line is “Can you hear me now?” The point being that this company gives the best reception and you don’t lose any calls. In the background you see scores of workers implying that there is a whole network of people working for you.

Of course if you don’t have a cell phone where you are located doesn’t matter, or if your phone is turned off or the battery is dead where you stand makes no difference. Even when your phone is turned on you can enter a ‘deadzone’ and you lose the signal.

The entrance of the Spirit into a heart is usually very quiet – no roaring wind or tongues of fire. So how will we know whether we’ve finally received the Spirit or not? I believe the way we live our lives will tell us: we will be seriously changed. We will see what God sees and love as God loves. We will start using the gifts we’ve always had in new ways that makes life better. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and all the others gifts conferred on us by the Spirit will blossom.

The risen Lord can send the Spirit but we have to be receptive, we have to be turned on and not in a ‘dead-zone’. We have to break out of our refuge where ‘the doors are locked’, break from narrow concerns of narrow minds; break free of barriers of insulation we have erected. We have to be receptive to his voice, “Can you hear me now?”
