This Thursday, Bishop Wang will celebrate
the Sacrament of Confirmation in our
parish. Fifty-eight young men and women
will profess that they are mature enough
to make a decision to follow Christ.
Following Christ is no longer a decision
made in the past by their parents but a
personal decision of the candidates. They
are asking the Holy Spirit to come into
their lives, to strengthen them in their
resolve and to stay with them in their
lifes journey. This is heady stuff
and not undertaken lightly.
In this
Sundays Gospel Jesus promised the
Spirit, the Advocate to be with us always.
This Advocate is active as spokesperson,
mediator, intercessor, teacher, comforter,
consoler, supporter, defender and an
abiding presence. The list can go on and
the gifts enumerated but we have to be
attentive and receptive. We have to live
in the confirmation of our faith. Without
the Holy Spirit, God is distant and remote
from His creation. Without the Spirit,
Christ becomes an historical figure with a
moral teaching. Without the Spirit, the
Gospel becomes the stuff of fairytales.
Without the Spirit, the Church is a social
club of likeminded people, seeking support
in a meaningless world. Without the
Spirit, preaching becomes control and
mission is domination. Without the Spirit,
afterlife is
pie-in-thesky.
With
the Holy Spirit, everything is changed,
changed utterly; Christ is risen and
present, the Gospel is alive, the Church
is community, we are members and Christ is
the head, preaching becomes liberation,
mission becomes an outpouring of new life
in Christ, and we become people made in
the image and likeness of
God.
When
Bishop Wang prays over the candidates and
anoints them with the Oil of Chrism, they
no longer have the option to be
laid-back Christians. They
undertake the challenge to live and
witness to Christs presence in our
world. The Holy Spirit, the Advocate will
be with them, now they will have to
advocate for Christ.
As part
of our Archdiocesan Missionary Cooperation
Plan,
at our May 4 weekend Masses, Sr. Irene
Cullen, RSCJ, will speak on behalf of her
Sisters in Uganda. The Religious of the
Sacred Heart serve as Gods people in
44 countries around the world. In Uganda
they work as social workers, nurses,
counselors, parish ministers, and
especially as Catholic educators in
elementary, high school, and colleges.
Special envelopes will be provided and you
are invited to support their missionary
effort as you feel inspired. Our
contribution will make a big difference in
this corner of Gods precious but
struggling world and will help orphaned
and vulnerable children go to school.
Thank you.
