“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

— John 14:6

A woman was full of miseries, so she came to tell her pastor all about it. “My children hate me. Nobody ever comes to visit me. My arthritis is getting worse. The sun hasn’t been out in weeks. And, this morning, the milk went sour.” Then her face brightened. “But you know Father, I’ve had this terrible headache all week and now it’s gone.”

The pastor sighed “No my dear. Your headache isn’t gone.

Now I’ve got it.”

Do you get headaches or do you give them? We can help one another in the same way Jesus did – by recognizing the powerful effect we have on one another, for good or ill, and by consciously deciding to make even our smallest choices add up into happy spaces where others can grow.

For example. For the short time we gather together for mass, we are creating a kind of space for one another. The look on our faces, the way we sit and stand and manage our kneelers, the way we make room for others, the way we sing or don’t sing, the way we respond to the prayers: All can lift the spirits of the person nearby, or can dampen those spirits. Not turning off your cell phone and allowing it to ring throughout the church grates on sacred silence and drives our minds not to God but to distraction. Chewing gum or drinking (oh yes drinking from a paper cup) is more in keeping with the ballpark setting then a church in which we come to worship. Coming in late and leaving early on a regular basis sends a message of indifference for the community and the Eucharist.

In such simple ways we can lift up or bring down, dampen the spirit or set it alight. By making small choices we can change our environment and help others worship in an atmosphere of prayer and reverence, or church can be a nuisance and give us a headache.
