Today is known as Good Shepherd
Sunday. The Shepherd calls each of
us amid all the discordant voices to
follow him.
The
March of the Penguins
(Released in 2005) is a fascinating
documentary about emperor penguins. It is
beautifully account of survival and
adventure told by actor Morgan
Freeman.
Every
year, thousands of these penguins make an
astonishing journey to breed their young.
They are birds but they do not fly. They
are aquatic animals, but this time they do
not swim. They walk marching day
and night in a single file for seventy
miles into the darkest, driest and coldest
place on earth -
Antarctica.
Once
they arrive at their destination they find
a partner and mate. This is not a casual
affair as the documentary demonstrates. It
is a commitment to the life they generate.
Once the egg is produced, it is the father
who takes the egg and keeps it in the
folds of his abdomen to protect it from
the bitter cold. The mother then treks
back the seventy miles to the sea to hunt
for food. The incredible part is that the
fathers huddle together for two months
thousands of them without
food or water, waiting for the mothers to
return. They have to endure frigid
temperatures and storms and never allow
the egg to be exposed to the sub-zero
temperatures. Spring comes and the egg
hatches. The chick is still too fragile to
remain outside the warmth of his
fathers protection.
The
mothers return to find their new
offspring. They know exactly which mate
and chick is theirs by their unique vocal
call. From the cacophony squeaks, shrills
and calls the mothers unite with their
starving mates and offspring. Without that
special call, the chicks would die and the
species would be destroyed.
Today
we are reminded to listen the call of
Jesus. The voice of Jesus is distinct,
unlike any other. It is the only voice we
are to follow. He is calling, are we
listening?
