Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
3rd Sunday of Easter
April 6th, 2008 Bulletin

You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.

— Acts 2:28

Two very sad men leave Jerusalem and head for their home in Emmaus. They are sad and scared and want to put some distance between themselves and what occurred in Jerusalem. Their friend, Jesus, in whom they had placed their trust and future, was crucified. Good Friday crushed their hopes and expectations. It was disaster for all who put their faith in Jesus. They were filled with disappointment, fear, and grief all at the same time. They were mourning the loss of a person they loved.

Yet, although they tried to distance themselves from the events, they could not get Jesus out of their system. They were heading to Emmaus and an unknown future when the stranger walked and talked with them.

Jesus the risen Lord walked with them. They rediscover their Lord only because despite their grief they were willing to listen to the wisdom of a stranger. The stranger gave then an insight to what had happened “these past few days”. It is an encouraging message for all of us in times of change and difficulty – when a loved one dies, when a cherished career comes to an end, when treasured dreams die. The message of Emmaus is that Jesus walks with us on these paths of dashed hopes and uncertain future.

The Risen Lord is with us and gives us food for the journey – his own body and blood. At Sunday Mass Jesus invites us to relive the Emmaus experience as we share the Eucharist with him. We bring to Mass the joys and sorrows of the week and Christ talks to us as he talked to the disciples on the road to Emmaus. And like the two disciple we go from the Eucharist joyous and renewed to share the Good News, that that the Lord is risen and how he was made known to us in the breaking of bread.
