“Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

— John 20:29b

On the evening of the day of Christ’s resurrection, St John tells us that the disciples had gathered in fear. I would image they were also gathered in shame and disgust at what they had failed to do. Here were the men who had followed Jesus, who had promised to stand by him and now they cowered out of sight of their fellow countrymen. They were cowards one and all.

Were their recriminations, accusations, were they pointing the finger at each other? Were the disciples angry at each other? Were they angry with Jesus for doing nothing? Did they believe they had misplaced their faith in Him? (“He saved others; he cannot save himself”) Did they blame each other or did they put all their guilt on Judas?

The disciples had locked themselves in. Fear was their motive, as it is the motive behind all locks. Suddenly “Jesus came and stood among them.” It does not say that he knocked on the door and asked to be admitted: they would not have believed him anyway. It does not say he rattled keys in the lock: that would have frightened them even more. Inexplicably, against all sense and reason, he stood among them; he stood within the tight circle of their fear. It is in their fear, their weakness, and their powerlessness that the risen Christ comes to them. He comes not to accuse, or excuse but to offer life. He looks at them and says, “Peace be with you.” It is a blessing that the risen Lord gives to his very guilty friends. The atmosphere in that room is changed and so is the life of all gathered there. The Lord is not talking about hurt and grievances or broken promises and cowardice; he is talking healing and life. The same risen Lord comes to each of us in our guilt, our doubt, our weakness and sin and says; “Peace be with you.”

We pray in a very special way this weekend for Rachael Vogl. On Saturday Sister Gabrielle, as she is now known, made her First Professions with the Sisters of the Society Devoted to the Sacred Heart. Sister Gabrielle Vogl is one of our own. She is a past pupil of St Dunstan Parish School. Her parents Dan and Ayde are Eucharist Ministers in our Parish and help in preparing our students for Confirmation. We are truly blessed to a have a member of our parish commit to the religious life. Sister Gabrielle is a woman of joy and exuberance. We wish all of God’s blessings on Sister Gabrielle as she undertakes this commitment to a life Chastity, Poverty and Obedience.
