Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Palm Sunday
March 16th, 2008 Bulletin

God greatly exalted [Christ] and bestowed on him the name which is above every name.

— Philippians 2:9

This week we celebrate the events that changed the world. We come to celebrate the Paschal Mystery: the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“Christian remembering is more than retracing the Lord’s steps during his last days in Jerusalem. At the Holy Thursday Eucharist, the Church is already drawn into the whole event of Jesus’ death and resurrection. The Good Friday celebration of the Lord’s passion is austere but never sad, for the risen Lord already reigns triumphant. On Holy Saturday the Church waits for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection and its own at the Easter Vigil, when the Spirit hovers over the waters of the font and the community of faith drinks deeply again of the mystery of Jesus’ passage from death to life.” (Roman Missal).

Make a special effort to attend the church ceremonies, which dramatizes the last agonizing moments of our Savior’s life. Listen to the passion story in a spirit of prayer and embrace its message. There is no point in comforting ourselves with the thought that a group of Jews and Romans crucified Christ two thousand years ago. The old spiritual hymn asks “Were you there when they crucified my lord? The last question that is asked in the hymn; ‘were you there when they rolled the stone away’? As we begin Holy Week we are asked to enter into the liturgical celebrations that define who we are. We are asked to enter into the death and resurrection of Christ.

If we are honest we can see shades of ourselves in all those who had a hand in the death of Jesus. Peter, Pilate, the soldiers and the jeering crowds should give us all pause to reflect. Lurking within each of us sleeps the same treachery. “Were you there when they rolled the stone away”? St. Paul tells us “yes” through our baptism; “If we have died with him we will surely rise with him.” This is Christ’s victory, our victory, this is our week.

EWTN will telecast Pope Benedict XVI conducting the following Holy Week liturgies: Palm Sunday Mass, March 16 at 5 pm; Mass of the Lord’s Supper, March 20 at 9 pm; Way of the Cross, March 21 at 5 pm; Easter Vigil Mass, March 22 at 9 pm; & Easter Sunday Mass, March 23 at 9 am; Easter Message & Blessing, March 23 at 10:30 am.
