The Gospel for today once again focuses
our attention on Jesus and life. His
friend Lazarus has died. Outwardly it
appears to be over, end of story, nothing
more can be done, Lazarus is dead,
lets go home.
But
its not the end of the story. Jesus
has the last word.
Jesus
who is the resurrection and the
life brings Lazarus back to life. He
is the Word of God and his word is
life.
Today
we are in a position to put together the
message of these last three Sundays of
Lent. They are interconnected and are
speaking to all of us in our situation in
life.
On the
Third Sunday Jesus promised the woman at
the well, The water I give shall
become a fountain
. leaping up to
provide eternal life. For us that
water is the sacrament of baptism. Last
Sunday Jesus cured a man born blind. The
miracle was a sign of the light of faith,
which comes to us in baptism and
enlightens us to see God and each other in
a new way. And today the raising of
Lazarus is a foreshadowing that, because
of baptism; we will be raised from the
dead to eternal life. Jesus worked an
extraordinary miracle in raising Lazarus
back to life. It happened in a different
place and in a different time. A more
extravagant and miraculous event occurs in
us at baptism; it is the transforming
presence of Jesus within us. He does not
say he will bring us back to life; instead
he gives us eternal life. In a way our
resurrection begins not just when our dead
bodies are raised to life but when the
spirit of Jesus begins to dwells in us.
Whoever believes in me though he
should die, will come to life; and whoever
is alive and believes in me will never
die.

REGULATIONS
Everyone
14 years of age and older is bound to
abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the
Fridays of Lent and Good
Friday.
Everyone
18 years of age and older but under the
age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash

another full meal. Drinking liquids during
the day is permitted.
When
health or ability to work would be
seriously affected, the law does not
oblige. In doubt concerning fast or
abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral
ministry or confessor should be consulted.
In the spirit of penance, the faithful
should not lightly excuse themselves from
this obligation.
Parishioners
