This Saturday we celebrate the first
Scrutiny at the 5:00 mass. The
scrutines are meant to uncover, then heal
all that is weak, defective, or sinful in
the hearts of the Elect. It is also our
pledge to pray for them and encourage them
by being faithful witnesses to the Gospel.
Also this Saturday, our candidates for
Confirmation are on retreat. The
scrutinies and retreat are not for special
interest groups in our faith community.
This is Lent and in a very real sense we
are all on retreat preparing to celebrate
the Paschal Mystery. We are called to
prayer, fasting and alms giving. We are
called to renew and deepen out
faith.
The
woman at the well represents many people!
She had liberal views and was very
tolerant; she could discuss what Jews and
Samaritans believed. She was not fanatical
in her beliefs. Jesus drew her by slow
steps into the depth of things. He gently
invited her to look at her life. We often
talk about the Faith as if it
were something out there, like
food in the grocery store, or like water
from the faucet. These do nothing for me
until I eat or drink. Likewise faith has
to become mine, like the food and drink in
my mouth. Jesus led the Samaritan woman to
faith gently and wisely; she would never
have come to it if he had just dumped it
on her. And it was the same for the others
who came to believe because of her. Our
Elect" and our Candidates for
confirmation have to be able to say, like
the people in the gospel, It is no
longer because of what you said that we
believe, for we have heard for ourselves,
and we know that this is truly the Savior
of the world."

LENTEN
REGULATIONS
Everyone
14 years of age and older is bound to
abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the
Fridays of Lent and Good
Friday.
Everyone
18 years of age and older but under the
age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday.
On
these two days , the law of fast allows
only one full meal a day, but does not
prohibit taking some food during the day,
so long as this does not constitute
another full meal. Drinking liquids during
the day is permitted.
When
health or ability to work would be
seriously affected, the law does not
oblige. In doubt concerning fast or
abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral
ministry or confessor should be consulted.
In the spirit of penance, the faithful
should not lightly excuse themselves from
this obligation.
Parishioners
are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of
Reconciliation during Lent, and to attend
Morning Prayer at 7:15 am, and one of the
three daily Masses at 6:30am, 8:00am and
5:10pm.
Stations
of the Cross are held Fridays at 2:15pm
& 7pm.
