Christ Jesus . . . destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

— 2 Timothy 1:10b

Two teenage boys were deep in conversation. “I’m really worried,” said one. “Day and night my dad slaves away at his job so I can have the best of everything and go to the best college. And my Mon! She spends everyday washing, ironing, cooking, cleaning up after me, and taking care of me when I’m sick.”

“So, what’s your problem?’ asked the other.

“I’m afraid they might try to escape!”

Most of us don’t even notice the people who’ve always just been there, making our lives comfortable and secure. Too often its only we have lost them that the “penny drops’ and we realize how important and special they are to us, and how we have wasted so many good years not enjoying and appreciating them more.

This week the gospel reading is the transfiguration of Jesus. Matthew’s version of this spectacular event highlights the transfiguration’s similarities with the Exodus account of God giving the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai. Both events occurred on a mountain; the face of God’s servant became radiant; a cloud represented God’s presence; and the divine voice spoke from the cloud. The disciples see Moses and Elijah representing The Law and the Prophets. The ‘penny drops’ the ‘light goes on’ for a few select disciple of Jesus. Peter, James and John, see Jesus for who he really is, the Son of God. They’d been with him for a long time, they had gotten used to him, but till this moment they never truly recognized him.

The voice of God coming from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him”. The focus had shifted to Jesus. He is not just another prophet, like the prophets of old. They were holy men, but they were just men. Jesus is God incarnate.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.

Everyone 18 years of age and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

On these two days , the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

Parishioners are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent, and to attend Morning Prayer at 7:15 am, and one of the three daily Masses at 6:30 am, 8:00 am and 5:10 pm.
