“The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.”

— Matthew 4:10

This week’s gospel reading is the temptation of Jesus. The temptation immediately followed Jesus’ baptism, where His divinity was revealed. He had heard of His true identity and relationship with His Father in the narrative of His baptism. The devil approached him with the scriptures in hand. He challenged Jesus’ identity and His relationship with His Father.

Under extremely trying circumstances, Jesus resisted Satan’s most enticing offers. The devil tempted Jesus with the three Ps: pleasure, prestige, and power. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to find out what he was made of. Mark’s gospel puts it more strongly: “the Spirit drove him out into the desert” (1:12). The first temptation was “to turn these stones into loaves of bread.” A hungry man sees bread everywhere. Satan offered Jesus bread to satisfy His gnawing hunger, which would have been very pleasurable for Him physically. Jesus was hungry, but he saw beyond his own hunger; he would become a provider of food for the hungry.

The second temptation was to win prestige and the approval others. Many false prophets had attempted to attract notice by doing spectacular feats. Jesus countered this by saying, emphatically; “One doesn’t play games with God.”

The third temptation was power. As a Jew he knew what power did to people; every day of his life he saw the Roman Empire at work. He knew that Roman emperors were ‘deified’ - proclaimed gods - after their death; to Jews, who had a profound sense of the unity of God, this practice was an abomination.

Jesus rejected all these possibilities. The gospel text doesn’t tell us at that point what he chose to do, but the rest of his life made it plain. He chose the way of love, which is deep, unspectacular, and powerless.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.

Everyone 18 years of age and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

On these two days , the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

Parishioners are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent, and to attend Morning Prayer at 7:15 am, and one of the three daily Masses at 6:30 am, 8:00 am and 5:10 pm.
