This Wednesday we begin the season of
Lent. It seems we jump immediately from
the Christmas Season right into Lent. This
year there is very little transition time.
Wednesday is not a Holy Day of obligation
but a day of ashes when we
begin the preparation for the Solemnity of
Easter.
Lent is
not a season of depression, even though
everything in the Liturgy is simplified
and we try to simplify our own lives too.
It is a time for returning to the heart.
Return to me with all your
heart. Notice how often the words
heart and secret
occur in the readings for Ash Wednesday
(pages 60-63 of Todays
Missal). It is contrasted with
being seen. Being
seen is about surfaces and
appearances.
To have
ashes on your forehead is not exactly
putting on make-up! Make-up is to beautify
and maybe mask our imperfections, ashes on
your forehead has the opposite intention:
it is to remind our imperfections and
mortality. This is not meant to be a
depressing reminder, just as Lent is not
meant to be a depressing time: this
joyful season the Liturgy calls it.
It is a time for truth rather than
cover-up.
During
Lent we are invited to spend additional
time in prayer. Prayer is that which
raises our awareness of the presence of
God. We are called to fasting
fasting from food, gossip, cell phones, or
social activities. It is an invitation to
almsgiving generously giving of
money or ourselves to the poor, homeless,
the stranger, socially needy, or to
family, friends. Lent is not the time for
long faces or hypocritical manifestations
of saintliness. It is a time of sincere
relationship building, possibly a time of
remorse and tears, but in essence a time
of journeying towards Easter and
celebrating our life in Christ.
Archbishop George Neiderauer cordially
extends an invitation to all married
couples of the Archdiocese of San
Francisco and beyond, to a Solemn
Eucharistic Celebration and renewal of
vows on Saturday, February 9 at 10 am at

LENTEN
REGULATIONS
Everyone
14 years of age and older is bound to
abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the
Fridays of Lent and Good
Friday.
Everyone
18 years of age and older but under the
age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday.
On
these two days, the law of fast allows
only one full meal a day, but does not
prohibit taking some food during the day,
so long as this does not constitute
another full meal. Drinking liquids during
the day is permitted.
When
health or ability to work would be
seriously affected, the law does not
oblige. In doubt concerning fast or
abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral
ministry or confessor should be consulted.
In the spirit of penance, the faithful
should not lightly excuse themselves from
this obligation.
Parishioners
are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of
Reconciliation during Lent, and to attend
Morning Prayer at 7:15 am, and one of the
three daily Masses at 6:30 am, 8:00 am and
5:10 pm.
Stations
of the Cross are held Fridays at 2:15 pm
& 7 pm.
|
Wednesday,
February 6 is Ash Wednesday. It
is not a holy day of
obligation. Masses will be at
6:30 am, 8 am, and 5:10
pm.
