Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time
January 27, 2008

Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.

— Psalm 27:14

A man was walking down a dark street one night when he saw a faltering, weaving pinpoint of light coming towards him. “Its probably a drunk,” he thought to himself. But as he drew nearer, he saw that it was a man with a flashlight, carrying a white cane! “Why would a blind man be carrying a light?” he wondered. So he asked him. The blind man smiled and said, “I carry my light, not so that I may see, but that others may see me. I can’t help being blind but I can let others see me.”

In many ways we are all blind and we are all asked to carry a light so people can see. We have received that light in baptism. In the baptism liturgy, the priest invites the parents or godparents to take a light from the Easter Candle and hold it for the baptized child. This symbolizes the light of Christ, which will shine in and through the newly baptized person. “You are the light of the world….your light must shine so that everyone will give the praise to your father in heaven.” Baptism is not a momentary event, which we leave behind in the church. We may indeed extinguish the baptismal candle but we are duty bound to keep the gift of faith alive in our lives. The call lasts forever.

Jesus' invitation to follow him in today’s Gospel appealed not to the head but to the heart. Very few of us reason our way into the Church. Most of us become Christian through the influence of others. By and large it is not clever words that move us but a person living the gospel. We are attracted to the inner light. We are called to keep the light of faith burning brightly so that others may see and follow Christ.
