Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time
January 20, 2008

I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.

— Isaiah 49:6b

The Gospel acclamation this Sunday tells us in part, “To those who accept him, he gave power to become children of God.” In Baptism we become children of God, members of the body of Christ. We have the same mission as Christ. Together with all fellow Christians we have taken on the role of being a light to the nations. We are called and commissioned to spread the word and bring the love and compassion of Jesus to the world in which we live. We are to be living examples of that love. Gandhi said, “You must be the change you want to see in the world”. For a Christian it might be truer to say, “We must be the Christ the world longs to see”.

Paul tells us today that we are ‘called to be holy’. If people see themselves as worthless they will not amount to much. If people believe they are called to greatness and act with courage and faith, they become great. It may be difficult to see ourselves as holy when we know we are sinners. We know we don’t always make the noble, the courageous or Christian choice. We have a deep fondness for sin. We miss the mark a great deal of the time. There is an inherent predisposition to sin in all of us. Not only to sin once but also to continue sin when we know we can do better. We are holy and we are sinful.

In the Gospel today however we hear John the Baptist say that Jesus is the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”. Christ, the Lamb of God, takes away not just the sins of the world, but my sins, my own personal sins. We are graced sinners because we have been called; called in our sinfulness to greatness.
