Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Baptism of the Lord
January 13, 2008

A voice came from the heavens, saying,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

— Matthew 3:17

In this week’s gospel reading, Jesus went out to the Jordan where John the Baptist was baptizing people. Jesus asked John to baptize Him, and John was stunned. He tried to discourage Jesus. “I need to be baptized by you,” John said, “and yet you are coming to me?”

But Jesus told John not to worry about it. He said, “Allow it now, for thus is it fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Jesus of Nazareth, now a young man, stands with people who are sinners and who want to change their ways. It expresses everything that he is going to be. He will show complete solidarity with sinners: he will sit and eat with sinners, share his life with them, defend them against heartless religious authorities who would call them unclean and cast them out. As he lived among them, he would die among them, crucified as an evildoer.

So this was it, the official beginning of Jesus’ ministry. The official start of that amazing and glorious event in history where God Himself would take on all the sins of humanity and make Himself an atoning sacrifice so that we would not perish. It was the beginning of the redemption of fallen mankind. Water is the way we cleanse ourselves. John's baptism was a cleansing, a kind of sign of self-improvement. Jesus would put it on a totally different realm. "I baptize with water," said John, "he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire". This is the real way of transformation. This is the way of new life. Only the Holy Spirit can change us, only the Holy Spirit can recreate us, only the Holy Spirit can make us children of God. If we are left to ourselves we just rearrange ourselves to look better. In baptism we are born through water and the Spirit.
