Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Fourth Sunday of Advent
December 23, 2007

They shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”

— Matthew 1:23

There is a kind of timelessness about Christmas: it takes us out of our routines; suddenly all the rush of preparation is over. It is a time of quiet but not just a time of nostalgia and remembering Christmases past. We are called to travel to that Bethlehem which is within us, to acknowledge and adore, to glorify and praise God, “For a child is born to us, a son is given us.” We are called to worship as community.

This Christmas could be the moment to experience something different from the perpetual motion that is our ordinary life. Christmas calls us to silence, to stop the rush of ceaseless activities.

Sometimes we say Christmas is boring, or sad, or too commercial…. Of course it is; if we make it is just like all the other times of the year. We are asked to allow Christ into our lives. We asked to allow space and time for anything new to appear.

Paradoxically, all the flashing lights, the incessant television, the emailing and text-messaging…all have the effect of filling our lives and so leaving no space to move, no space for anything really different to appear.

“The light shines in the darkness.”  But it does not shine in artificial light.  We have to turn something off.  We have to leave space and time for the new thing to appear.

“The Word became flesh and lived among us”. This is not announced in the excited voice of the advertisers; it is a silent deed hidden in obscurity.  He is the Word made flesh, but he lies there as helpless to speak as any infant.  Only in silence can this silent Word be heard. This Christmas let us leave aside the rush of the world and come in silence and wonder to adore the newborn king.

The rectory will be closed Monday and Tuesday and open from 10 am to 2 pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The priests and staff of St. Dunstan Parish wish you and yours a blessed and happy Christmas.

Angels Explained by Children

“Some of the angels are in charge of helping heal sick animals and pets. And if they don’t make the animals get better, they help the child get over it”.
