Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Third Sunday of Advent
December 16, 2007

Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy.

— Isaiah 35:10a

Recently there was a book published, “Mother Teresa: Come be my Light”. It is a story about her life. The media of course picked up on only one aspect of her life. She had doubts. She was tormented by intense spiritual darkness. Some of her harshest critics gloated over her doubts. They believed these doubts proved she was a fraud. No, her doubts prove that faith is difficult.

John the Baptist, in this Sunday’s gospel begins to question himself. We find John the Baptist in prison for telling the truth. He was an outspoken critic of Herod and was thrown into jail. He also spoke out and challenged the religious leaders of his day. He told the people of the one coming after him. John was preparing the way for him and he felt he was not worthy to even carry his sandals. But John’s prophecy about the one coming after him seems to be off the mark. In prison John has heard about the person Jesus. This Jesus oozes mercy and has a fondness for the most miserable in the community. He associates with those suffering from ailments and physical deformity. He befriends those who are reviled by decent people. He is gentle and works miracles of wholeness, forgiveness and hope. It is no wonder John was experiencing doubts about the identity of Jesus. When he sends his disciples to Jesus he voices the problem relevant in every age. “Are you the one or should we look for another”?

Advent is an opportune time to assess our understanding of Jesus. Does he conform to my way of thinking or do I conform to him? Does he measure up to my expectations? Are we so different from John the Baptist? He wondered and reflected about Jesus. Doubts can be very real and painful; they do not prove lack of faith. John struggled, Mother Teresa struggled but they did not loose faith in Jesus.
