Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
First Sunday of Advent
December 2, 2007

"You . . . must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come."

— Matthew 24:44

Now that Thanksgiving is over we are bombarded by the advertising industry telling us to prepare for the “holiday season’. (They are afraid to mention Christ in case they offend someone.) Their message is very simple. “Hurry up, don’t be late, now is the time to buy and buy and buy”. They give us the allure of “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” and invite us to become part of the financial spending spree. When Christmas does arrive the secular world moves on to the next opportunity to make money. It has nothing to say about Christmas, the Good News of salvation, or God become man. For the commercial world Christmas ends on Christmas day, and the world moves on

As Christians we, see this period of time before Christmas not as a spending spree but a time of preparation. The Advent season is an invitation to renew our Christian commitment and to start living that life Christ’s first coming made possible. We prepare for his final coming at the end of time; as today’s gospel says, ‘we do not know the day or the hour.’ We live between Christ’s first coming and his coming again in glory. Advent is not about the past but about here and now. We are called to conversion and to experience the warmth of his love more deeply. The gospel calls us to ‘stay awake!’ The eternal Son of God seeks an entry into our inner most being so that he may share his life with us. He is the one who, at the end of the day, waits for us.

In the commercial world everything maybe on sale and offered at reduced prices. For us who are preparing to celebrate the birth of Christ, we are not to reduce our expectations; nothing is offered to us on the cheap. We are offered a gift that only God can give, at a price we cannot pay, the gift of God made man.

BIBLE STUDY AT ST. DUNSTAN
