Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
November 25, 2007

I rejoiced because they said to me, “We will go up to the house of the LORD.”

— Psalm 122:1

Jesus cried out in agony, “Forgive them Father they do not know what they are doing”, as he hung on the cross. The crowd on that lonely hilltop failed to recognize the truth of the person before them.

They treated him as a common criminal, deserving death on a cross. He was crucified between two thieves. The soldiers mocked him, played dice for his clothes and offered him cheap wine. The only crown he wore was made of thorns. Only his mother and a few friends were faithful to the last. In a demonstration of contempt, a sign was placed over his head, ‘Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.’

Christ the King reigns from the cross. For him there are no gold-laden clothes, only nakedness before his people. For him there are no armed bodyguards on his right and left, only two thieves to share in his painful death. For him there is no adulation from the crowd, only a mob howling for blood. For him the cross became his throne. Nobody recognized him as king. Nobody recognized the presence of God. ‘He was so inhumanly disfigured that he did not look like a man’. (Is. 52:14)

He lived a few short years among his own people and they failed to acknowledge him as anything other than a carpenter from Nazareth.

We believe this same person, who hung on the cross is risen from the dead and demands our complete loyalty. He became our king when we give him our allegiance at baptism. Christ is claiming us, blessing us from the “sign of the Cross” and with this blessing inviting us to receive all He is saying about us and to us from this wooden Throne. As he looks out from his Throne what does he see? Are we still getting it wrong and does he still pray, “Father forgive them they do not know what they are doing”.

BIBLE STUDY AT ST. DUNSTAN

Are you interested in learning more about the Gospels? How they came into being and who wrote them? Why some gospel writing is not included in the Bible? If the answer is ‘yes’, come and join a “Bible Study Group”. Fr. Jim is organizing a study group to meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month at 10 am in the “crying room” in the back of the church. You may sign up by calling the rectory at 697-4730, to say you will attend. Please bring a bible, notebook, and pen with you.

Angels Explained by Children

“Angels have a lot to do and they keep very busy. If you lose a tooth, an angel comes through your window and leaves money under your pillow. Then when it gets cold, angels go north for the winter.”

-Sara, 6
