In the gospel reading, Jesus speaks about
the trials and tribulations of the end
times. He offers these somber words:
Nation will rise against nation, and
kingdom against kingdom. There will be
powerful earthquakes, famines, and
plagues
.they will seize and
persecute you
.You will even be
handed over by parents, brothers,
relatives, and friends, and they will put
some of you to death. You will be hated by
all because of my
name.
Jesus
begins this tale of doom and gloom by
saying, When you hear of wars and
insurrections, do not be terrified.
He does not give is dates, times and
locations. Jesus gives us hope in the
midst of this future (present?) turmoil,
he does not give us
predictions.
The
message of the Scripture readings this
Sunday is fairly simple: bad stuff is
going to happen. But when it does happen,
you dont need to fear as long as you
trust in the Lord. We often lose sight of
the fact that despite the chaos swirling
around us so often, God is in charge. Yes,
He allows much of the chaos to
happenfor now, Why? I dont
know.
The
responsorial Psalm says: The Lord
comes to rule the earth with
justice. This is both a prophesy and
a promise. The chaos of this world is only
temporary. The Day of the Lord will come,
and at that time God will set everything
right.
In the
meantime, just knowing that God is aware
and that He cares can be very comforting.
In Johns gospel, chapter 16, Jesus
explained in very simple but powerful
terms why we should not be anxious. He
said, In this world you will have
tribulation But be of good
cheer, I have overcome the
world.
Thats
the key: the Lord is in charge. He has
overcome the world. We are not to be
overwhelmed by the world. What is
frightening is not the predictions of the
world coming to an abrupt end but that we
have not begun to live the Good
News.
BIBLE
STUDY AT ST. DUNSTAN
Are you
interested in learning more about the
Gospels? How they came into being and who
wrote them? Why some gospel writing is not
included in the Bible? If the answer is
yes, come and join a
Bible Study Group. Fr. Jim is
organizing a study group to meet the 1st
and 3rd Thursdays of each month at 10 am
in the crying room in the back
of the church. You may sign up by calling
the rectory at 697-4730, to say you will
attend. Please bring a bible, notebook,
and pen with you.
