Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.

— Psalm 145:14

St. Luke in his gospel gives us a delightful story about the boundless love that God has for sinners. It shows us the forgiveness that he offers, with open arms, to the very worst of us. We are invited to look beyond the outward appearance and to see life, goodness in the most insufferable of people. How we see others may be a reflection of our true self.

Tax collectors were among the most despised people in the time of Jesus. The tax system itself ensured that. Their wages was the money they could extort from their own people over and above what they collected for the occupying Roman powers. Zacchaeus was ‘a chief tax collector’, one of the best at his job. Everything that Luke has written about wealth prepares us for a fierce confrontation between Jesus and Zacchaeus. What we hear instead is an invitation to dinner!

On other occasions when Jesus consorted with ‘tax collectors and sinners,’ it was the Pharisees who complained. On this occasion ‘all who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.”’

“All who saw it”, did not see what Jesus saw. Besides the comical scene of a small man up a tree, Jesus saw into the heart of Zacchaeus. Jesus saw his pain, his isolation and the turmoil of his heart. He saw the innate decency of him. Jesus did not make fun of Zaccheaus because of his small stature or revile him because of his profession. Jesus drew that goodness out of Zacchaeus with a word of appreciation. He was not excluded and his acceptance by Jesus made all the difference. Zacchaeus came down the tree a changed man. The people saw a man with a past. Jesus saw a sinner with a future.

This week we pray for our candidates for Confirmation. They are beginning their formal journey toward a fuller life in the Holy Spirit. We pray for the strengthening of the candidates' relationship with the Holy Spirit throughout their preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
