Two apples up in a tree were looking down
on the world. The first apple said, "Look
at all those people fighting, robbing,
rioting -- no one seems willing to get
along with his fellow man. Someday we
apples will be the only ones left. Then
we'll rule the world."
Replied
the second apple, "Which of us -- the reds
or the greens?
In our
readings of this weekend we are given some
guidance in how we should pray. We are
offered this guidance in the form of a
story about two men. The Pharisee was
quite right in performing his religious
and moral duties. He was not an
extortionist, an adulterer or unjust. To
the hearers of the story he was a
blameless person. The tax collector on the
other hand had nothing to recommend him.
He was considered one of the dregs of
society, a tax collector, a swindler and
generally a nasty piece of work. However
the Pharisee set before the Lord all his
merits, all his accomplishments, believing
himself superior to the tax collector. He
stood before the Lord with head unbowed,
proud of his achievements. He was telling
God of all his accomplishments. You have
to wonder who he was he addressing. His
high opinion of himself depended on his
low opinion of others.
The tax
collector on the other hand, knew he had
nothing going for him. He probably
admitted to being an extortionist an
adulterer and an unjust person. In any
case, he stood there with head bowed, eyes
downcast, ashamed of his past. Left to
himself, he realized he was lost. He beat
his breast and threw himself on the mercy
of God. He knew two things. First he knew
himself and his own sinfulness. He also
knew he was addressing God.
