A tale is told about a small town that had
historically been "dry," but then a local
businessman decided to build a tavern. A
group of Christians from a local church
were concerned and planned an all-night
prayer meeting to ask God to intervene. It
just so happened that shortly thereafter
lightning struck the bar and it burned to
the ground. The owner of the bar sued the
church, claiming that the prayers of the
congregation were responsible, but the
church hired a lawyer to argue in court
that they were not responsible. The
presiding judge, after his initial review
of the case, stated that "no matter how
this case comes out, one thing is clear.
The tavern owner believes in prayer and
the Christians do
not.
Christs
message to keep on praying, to keep on
knocking and not to give up, is at odds
with the fast paced world we live in. This
is an age where we have become accustomed
to instant results and are impatient with
delays. Everything has to be now, if not
sooner. The Internet is slow if it takes
thirty seconds to download a document. We
can now send a text message on a mobile
phone and it is received in in real
time. What happens on the far side
of the globe is immediately relayed into
our homes. We have become familiar to the
sound bite as the essence of a
news story.
Praying
is not easy. The disciples realized how
difficult it was to pray so they asked the
Lord to teach them. Prayer takes time,
determination and patience.
Making
prayer a daily habit means that we
appreciate its importance and are prepared
to make room for it in our hectic
schedule. When something becomes precious
to us we dont leave it to
chance.
